Just in Colombia the Language Day was imposed by the decree number 707 of April 23rd of 1938, and in the most of the schools and some universities students and teachers celebrate this day through tributes to Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, author of "The ingenious gentleman Don Quixote de la Mancha" published the first time in 1605, this is one of the most representative writer in spanish, moreover this date is used to commemorate the day of the death of William Shakespeare, that's why we celebrate the English language day too.
To conclude with this very short review of the Language day, remember that English is the first spoken language in the world with 1456 million english speakers and Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world with 559.1 million of spanish speakers.

On the other hand UNESCO declared on November 17th of 1999, the International Mother Language Day to be celebrated every February 21st to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism.
